Numb thumb

Recommended Posts

I'm working with an F hook and for some reason the thumb I use to brace the hook keeps going numb. I'm sure it's from the pressure, but does anyone know how to alleviate this? I've never really had this happen before and it's annoying and makes me lose track of my stitches lol

Take it easy Christine. Try to relax your grip on the hook and take lots of breaks. I don't like working with such a small hook, for the same reason you have. You might want to try to pad your hook with something like foam rubber, to make it easier to hold.

Definitely do what Dot said! If you're going numb, you're probably putting pressure on a nerve, and that's no good at all... Hope it gets better soon!

My walmart sells little cushy tubes you can stick your hook into--I haven't tried them, but I bet that would help...

That's a great idea! Thanks for the advice.

Last night I was thinking of something akin to the foam pencil grippers but wasn't sure that would do the trick. I'll give it a try and see if it helps.

I've tried pencil grips... smallest I tried it with was my H hook and it slipped down a lot on that one... but the bigger ones it stays put. So if you try it with your F, you might need to wrap something underneath it to get it to stay where you want it... but it might help.

My fingers sometimes go numb when I sit just wrong, pinching a nerve somewhere I guess. I just have to scoot around till I find a comfortable spot that doesn't cause it. I have a couple of spots in my back that kinda tingle, had em since my second pregnancy, which was before I ever had an epidural, so it wasn't that lol. I don't know what causes it, but it's a spot about the size of a quarter near my shoulder blades. Weird. Not painful or anything though. But I figure that has something to do with my occasional numbness in my fingers when crocheting.

Flexing/shaking out your hands every so often might also help.

Does anyone remember those awful pink foam rubber curlers:? I bought a pack of the small ones and used a rubber band to secure the foam to the hook. :idea It works pretty good. :yes I've also just wound a fat rubber band around the hook.

Now see I"m one of those that can't abide the foam grips.. they make the hook too big and hard to hold for me, course I don't like the bigger hooks either lol I typically use anything from an F thru a H.. anything bigger and it starts to get on my nerves badly... lol but even on those sizes the foam grips are too big.

For the tiny thread needles I found once a grip that is rubber, but you boil water, drop it in, leave it a few seconds, then while it's still soft slip it on the thread needle, then form it to your fingers (much like they do those plastic mouthguards for football). When it cools off in a few minutes, it is shaped to your hands and very comfortable to use. It makes a huge difference on the smaller needles.. but I've not been able to find them lately lol
