hook sizing and pattern instructions

i have boye, bates, totc hooks, and 1 french hook

 

is there anyway to determine the best size hook for project beside making a gauge sample?

 

when instructions say "g" or "j" are they referring to the bates or boye sizing?

Most countrys are in mm , American are letters..Like size C hook would be 2.5mm. Some hooks have letters and mm on them. Doesn't mater what company makes them, one or the other is on them...

The most accurate way is by mm, but a lot of patterns don't give that. That's why when gauge is important, it's best to do a swatch and see what matches the closest.
