Banana fiber

I was gifted some banana fiber yarn and have no clue what to do with it. It isn't soft, twists easily, and is of varying thickness. 

What can I make? If a scarf, any pattern suggestions? I tried a few stitches and didn't like how they worked up...

I'm not familiar with it - what came to mind was rayon made with banana fiber.  But a little googling says otherwise, and that it is best uses for 'table linens and other household items'.

Most of my crochet nowadays is using mercerized cotton thread (doilies and the like), and the skein shown in the above article looks sort of like that, except not mercerized.  It looks a little rugged for clothing, I'd use it for what the article recommends -- maybe for a throw pillow cover, placemat, maybe a shopping tote.
