Just a comment because the text spacing looked odd, and made me thing it could lead to misreading something

Dc in next dc (dc in next ch - 1sp and in next 5 dc) 5 times

In the row below, there must have been "something, chain 1, (maybe but not necessarily skip the next stitch) something". 

So now in you are in the following row, so where you made a chain between stitches, that is a 'chain 1 space' because chains float above other stitches, and make a little open pace between other stitches.

Do read the link that BGS gave you because there is all sorts of good stuff there, but another way to write the above would be "Dc in next dc, *dc in next ch-1 sp and in next 5 dc; repeat from * a total of 5 times"
