I wonder if she is left handed, her stitches are 'biasing' to the left, my right-handed stitches bias to the right.

The photos don't blow up well enough to tell, but I'd agree with NCcountrygal's guesses of SC or HDC, those stitches would be the most compact and sturdiest and typical for solid bags like that.

If it's the shredded look you like, that looks likely to be made by holding a cut length of yarn along with the project yarn for a few stitches and letting the ends dangle to the front.

Edited to add - the pattern suggested by NCcountrygal is a good one in that it looks easy yet sturdy.  I have never done this but I'd suggest for the last round including the handle, to work around a 'clothesline' or sturdy piece of small dimension cotton rope ('clothesline crochet' apparently used to be a thing, for making sturdy baskets and rugs).
