Crochet scarf problem

Lady T

Question

I’m stuck on a simple pattern. The scarf doesn’t lay flat like it does in the picture. I can’t figure out where I’m going wrong. Here are instructions: row 1: Ch 4, ( 4 dc, ch3, slip st) in fourth ch from hook. Row2: Ch 3, turn; ( 4 dc, ch 3, slip stitch in first ch 3 sp. Repeat row 2 till it measures 65”.
For row 2 are the ch 3, slip st are all in the same space as the 4 dc? It doesn’t lay flat

It works for me, I just tried 4 rows.  The only thing I can think of, is the chain 3 should = the height of 1 DC, if you make tight or loose chains you might have to adjust the # of chains.

The only other thing I can think of that might be misinterpreted, is 'in chain 3 space'.  Normally that is understood to mean that you stich around the chain, which is what I did.  Does your piece look like mine?

Forgot to answer your question. "Row2: Ch 3, turn; ( 4 dc, ch 3, slip stitch in first ch 3 sp."  The next chain 3 sprouts out of the slip stitch that ends the last chain space, so you can sort of say it's 'in' the following chain space.  Each row appears to have 5 DC in it, whether the DC is a chain 3 that starts the round or real DCs, EXCEPT the last row, which appears to have 6 - because all the other rows' ending 'chain 3, slst in chain space' get covered up by the next row, except the last row...

Wow. Thank you so much for replying. This is so cool.
Yours look exactly how it looks in the book. But mine doesn’t. Not sure where I’m messing up. I don’t understand the ‘ in chain 3 sp’ you said you went stitched around the stitched around the chain that could be where I’m going wrong. Here’s my picture

"row 1: Ch 4, ( 4 dc, ch3, slip st) in fourth ch from hook.

Row2: Ch 3, turn; ( 4 dc, ch 3, slip stitch in first ch 3 sp. Repeat row 2 "

The bolded part in row 1 is where you make row 2 into (or around, mostly).  The bolded red part in row 2 is where you make row 3 into, and this is what gets repeated.  So every time you chain 3 after 4 dc, and slip stitch back into the chain space the earlier 4DC in that same row were made around, you are making the chain space for the NEXT row to go into.

This is a variation of a stitch that has many names, including the 'c2c' (corner to corner) stitch, brick stitch, crazy stitch...

I'm not quite sure what you are doing, all the shells seem to be around 1 foundation line.  Look at my photo, the first stitch group (I'll call it a shell) is at the bottom left.  The second shell is at the bottom right, and it's base is coming out of the side of the first shell.  Then the third shell is on the left, above the first shell, and is sprouting out of the second shell.  The fourth shell is the top right one, sprouting out of the side of the third shell.  I hope that make sense?

I see Bgs has replied with some BIG pics, hopefully that illustrates better what I was trying to describe.

The chain 3 space is at top of my photo.

It is at row 2 ch3 turn.20201229_190901.thumb.jpg.80d9017d930d19156d814a0f432ea847.jpg

This photo shows my hook inserted in ch 3 space getting ready to pull yarn around the ch to make a dc
