Did you make a chain 5 in the last row?  If you did, you will single crochet 1 stitch through the chain 5 loop.  It will give you sort of a hole.

What is the pattern you are doing?

^ What she said.  When you are making something lacy, like with chain loops (or some patterns call it a chain space), it will have you work through (around) the loop.  You know how you make a stitch the usual way, and insert the hook under the top 2 loops of the stitch in the row below?  It's the same thing, except the span of chains act like the top 2 loops, and is just a roomier area to insert your hook into.
