Working in a round

Hi!  My name is Kerrie and I am fairly new to crocheting.   I just completed 3 sets of fingerless gloves that I plan to give as Christmas gifts.  I just started a pumpkin pattern.  I have completed the first 3 rounds no problem ending with 18 stitches.  My question is round 4 is asking me to [2sc, 2sc in next stitch] at the end I should have 24 stitches...however if I put 2 sc in each of my 18 previous sc I end up with 36 stitches.  What am I not getting?

In round 4 you increase in every 3rd stitch so its sc in one stitch of previous row, sc in next stitch of previous row, 2sc in next stitch of previous row

Bgs got this right.  I was going to say sc - sc - 2 sc.  This is the pattern for 3 stitches all across this row.
