Welcome to Crochetville!

At the beginning of the pattern it will say that the pattern can be made in different sizes.  To get different sizes, the instructions vary slightly.  The smallest size is first and the bigger sizes are in ().  So, you pick which size you are doing.  Do the number of chains for your size and ignore the other ones.  It helps me to take a highlighter and highlight the instructions that I'm using.

I hope that clears it up!  If not, let us know.

ETA: I should have given an example.  Let's say that the sizes are S, M, L or XL and you want medium (M).  You would chain 10 and ignore the other numbers.

If I don't want to mark my pattern I use a sheet protector and a dry erase marker.  Since my grandkids are different ages I sometimes end up making the same pattern in several different sizes.  With this method you can erase your marks and highlight for another size.

This also works great for complicated patterns where keeping up with your stitches and what row you are working can be a big help,
