Basketweave Cowl Crochet Pattern Help

Alena Pitts-Underwood

Question

I need some clarification on how exactly I'm supposed to work this basketweave pattern, since its not like other basketweave stitches I've done in the past.

Pattern Reads:

Ch  48

Row 1: (RS). 1 dc in 4th ch from hook. (Skip next 3 ch. 1 tr in each of the next 3 ch. Working in skipped chs behind 3 tr, 1 tr in each of the 3 skipped ch) 7 times. 1 dc in each of last 2 ch. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc). 1 dc in each of next 4 sts. (Skip next 3 sts. 1 tr in each of the next 3 sts. Working in skipped sts in front of 3 tr, 1 tr in each of 3 skipped sts) 6 times. 1 dc in each of last 5 sts. Turn

Row 3: Ch 3. 1 dc in next dc. (Skip next 3 ch. 1 tr in each of next 3 ch. Working in skipped sts behind 3 tr, 1 tr in each of 3 skipped sts). 7 times. 1 dc in each of last 2 dc. Turn.

Last 2 rows form Basketweave Pattern.

** I'm confused on how I'm supposed to skip 3 ch, then 1 tr in next 3 ch, and then stitch 1 tr in skipped chs behind 3 tr.

The way I'm reading the pattern, the 6 tr form an X, but not the basketweave pattern. If I could get clarification on the bold/underline section, it would be greatly appreciated.

FYI: This is a free pattern that can be found on the Joann's website. Here is the link: http://joann.com/basketweave-cowl/3165880P210.html

here is one tutorial http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-make-a-crossed-double-crochet-stitch.html

see if that helps at all.

this kind of stitch is often done with post sts and I somehow assumed this one was too...reread a few times and finally realized it is NOT post sts.   really wish i could open the Joann link so i could see a pic of it!

I've done this stitch for a hat.  It's confusing until you try it.  Then it will make more sense.  Like Kathy said, it makes a big X.

Normally stitches are ....

/  /  /  /  /  /

6 5 4 3 2 1

These are ...

/  /  /  \  \  \

3 2 1 6 5 4

So, you're moving over to start the 6 stitches in the 4th spot, then the 5th, then the 6th.  Now pretend that they aren't there and go back and make the stitches in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd spots.  The tops of the 6 stitches will look like 6 normal stitches.  The actual stitches will be /// \\\ (except crossed over each other.)

Cool pattern.  I've seen and used a plain 2 stitch cross X stitch before, like this (much simpler than yours, but the same idea)

/   \

1  2

instructions for simple 2 stitch X - but your pattern skips 3, then fills in 3 like Redrosesdz's diagram above.
