Adding material patches to crochet?

I've recently made an amigurumi that I want to decorate by adding patches of material.

 

I don't know the best way to add, I was thinking of sewing the material on, like in the photo I've attached, but I'm worried about the material fraying.

 

Has anyone else tried this before? Any tips would be very much appreciated.

I don't see the photo, but I think for a woven fabric you would need to hem it to prevent fraying.  Or you could use fleece or perhaps felt, fabrics that don't fray.

The ears are done with fabric and folding over the raw edge around, you use the blanket stitch. The blanket stitch can also be used with felt and it would be easier to do since there is no need to fold a raw edge under, all around, while doing the stitch.

I usually use felt.  You can slip-stitch it in place, or embroider it on with a blanket stitch or small running stitch.  You can also glue it on.
