How long should a dress be?

Jayashiangel

Question

I have google/searched hi and low...and still can't find a set answer..When making baby dresses how long should they be from top of the neck line to the Knee???I don't like dresses that just cover the bottom of the diaper!! I think it looks tacky as well I have seen lots of dresses patterns that are above the diaper like a long shirt why? Hope some one can tell me the answers to length and the other questions I randomly asked.... :think

Baby proportions are very different from adults, their torsos are much longer than their legs, where for adults it's the other way around.  It's not a great distance from baby crotch to knee, and the diaper makes dresses flare out which compounds things.

There are a lot of patterns for diaper covers that are meant to be seen, many have frilly bottoms etc.  If the short dresses bother you, maybe you could make a matching diaper cover to go with the dress?  Some free ones below:

That sounds like a good length!  The other thing you can do is grab your tape measure and go to a store.  Find what you think is a good length and measure it.  I've gone to the local Salvation Army to do this, because the selection of styles is better and you don't get strange looks.
