The best way to join granny squares is join as you go.  There are several video tutorials out there.  It's basically linking the chain spaces, including the corners as you finish the 2nd through last square.  Instead of just doing the chain between the 3 dc stitches, you insert your hook in the completed square and then complete your chain.

Here's a video that got a lot of positive comments .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3WnJjKjudw

If you already have the squares made, then there are 4 ways that I know of.  All have videos and tutorials on youtube.

  1. Whip stitch
  2. Slip stitch
  3. Single crochet
  4. Mattress stitch

I just finished an afghan yesterday using a type of Reverse Mattress Stitch to join the squares. I've used it more times than I can remember and was surprised to see it in a tutorial finally.

flat braid join is another way if you already have the squares. I use it a lot. If you google it, you can find many instructions on how to do it
