I want to make a circle shaped bikini/top

Amber Valenzuela

Question

(perhaps this is question is more fitting for this section)

Hello guys! This is my first post on here and I was wondering if I could get your help! I have been crocheting for about a year and half. I can read patterns well but I still don't know how to make up my own just yet.

I am going to a music festival this summer and I want to make my outfits.

One idea for an outfit was going to be a candy themed costume

I wanted to make the breast part like lollipops and then crochet down to a little bit past the belly button

http://images.coplusk.net/project_images/38567/image/full_lolli3_1260227917.jpg (like this for the bra cup- but will be blue/white and white for the swirl)

I have googled patterns for bra shapes and such but they tend to be more triangular.

So if I was just to go in the rounds for this lollipop, how would I make it so that it has room for the breast? if that makes sense? Like for the tirangle bras, I have noticed they add more to the center to compensate for the shape, so I just wanted to know how to do that for this circle and swirly bra that I want to make?

Do you think it would be simple?

AND just for added input. Since I wanted to do blue lollipops (I have a blue wig) what would be a good color to go with the blue lollipops for the the rest of the top? I was thinking red, but my friend doesnt think it will go well?

THanks for your help!

Welcome to the ville!

I would suggest you start with a spiraled hat pattern http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#craft=crochet&query=Spiral&view=captioned_thumbs&availability=free&sort=created&pc=hat

Those are all free, and you can change the search to include ones in books, which you can get via your public library, or ones for sale.

Go to Crochetcabana and look at the tutorials on making flat circles and hats, to understand the formula for increasing for a flat disc. You will want your pieces to be more cone or dome shaped than flat, so adjust your increases for that shape.

To make the colors distinct, i would not use a yarn that has both blue and white in it, i would use blue yarn and white yarn.

That would be tough, I think you're in for a lot of trial, error, and ripping to get it to fit right.  Here is a tutorial that shows how to crochet cones of various shapes which might help

Here is a hat pattern with a 2 color spiral, but it's DC not SC like your pic http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/chunky-2-color-spiral-hat.  This is a technique that I've not tried yet so I can't say if it makes a difference.

Or another thought, find a bikini top pattern to take the guesswork out of the fit and then make a lollipop applique--would still have to be shaped somewhat but might be a little easier.

GrannySquare, that is a great tutorial!

I definitely agree on the trial and error, there will be a lot I'm sure.

taking off on the applique idea, the colored swirl could be crochet and sewn on, or embroidered even.

Oh, embroidered!  Surface slip stitch might fill the bill, but would be narrower than the DC spiral I linked.  Here's 1 tutorial, or if you google there are lots of You-Tubes. It's really easy, especially for something like a spiral where you would keep a continuous thread going.
