What is this stitch?

I came across this photo and would love to try and make something similar myself, but wasn't sure what this stitch was or how to do it.  Thank you for any help!

that looks to me like macrame, not crochet.  where are the photos from?  maybe there are more clues there.

That's interesting. I did a search of macrame clothing and found a lot of similiar pictures but no patterns .

I've never done macrame, but it doesn't look like knit or crochet to me.  

 

You can get a similar look in knit with a 'drop stitch' technique (this would yield a single vertical thread, not a double one unless you held 2 strands together, but then the stitched row would be a little bulkier).

 

You could easily do something sort of similar with a really tall stitch, chain 1 (like a triple triple or however many yarn overs to get the height you want.)  But, the vertical parts would be slightly thicker.
