Pattern Help

Faye Thomas Sowers

Question

Hi all. I just signed up as a member. So glad I found you.

I have a question about a pattern I am working on.

The pattern comes from a book by Leisure Arts called "Afghans for all seasons"

I am trying to do the pattern for COUNTRY BLOCKS.

Row 2 states: Ch 4, turn, * dc in next dc, (dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc) 3 times, ch 1; repeat from *

My question is: What comes FIRST? The star * or the ( )

Also where it states 3 times, i am very confused. Does that mean 3 in 1 space?

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks in advance for any help given.

Faye

Actually what you do is repeat from the star, and in that repeat you do the stuff between the () 3 times.  so this is how the first time will look, then you will repeat it.

Chr turn *dc in next dc, dc in next ch1 sp, dc in next dc,- dc in next ch1 sp dc in next dc,- dc in next ch1 sp dc in next dc.

So you will repeat from the * to the end.

Row 2 states: Ch 4, turn, * dc in next dc, (dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc) 3 times, ch 1; repeat from *

means

Ch 4, turn

*dc in next dc,

dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc

dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc

dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc

ch 1

Then, you repeat the part in red, however many times you need to

Here's a useful link on how to read patterns and their punctuation--see page 3
