To attach the finished strap... there is a buttonhole in the center of the strap.  'Button' that onto the lid's knob.
IF THERE IS AN OPENING IN THE HANDLES, run each end of the strap through an opening, then back to the top where each end of the strap is buttoned to the knob.
IF THERE ARE NO OPENINGS IN THE HANDLES, depending on how the handles are made, you may be able to loop the strap around the handle, then back to the top and button to the knob.

Some crockpots come with a strap to use when transporting food.  If the pot tips over, the strap eliminates or lessens spillage.  When the pot is stored, the strap keeps the lid from falling off and breaking when lifting in and out of the cabinet.  Lifting the lid on a crockpot while food is cooking can require additional cooking time, so the strap helps discourage 'peekers'.

It is best to make this with cotton yarn so it won't have much stretch to it.  The strap should be snug.

Crockpot Strap

Supplies:

cotton yarn (I used black Peaches & Cream)
size D crochet hook

[NOTE:  The last row of stitches that you make before starting a buttonhole will always be referred to as row 2.]

(Row 1) Ch 12, dc in 4th ch from hook and in nx 8 sts. Ch 3, turn.

(Row 2) Dc in nx 9 sts, ch 3, turn.

Make a buttonhole:
(Row 3) Dc in nx 4 sts, ch 3, turn.

(Row 4) Dc in nx 4 sts, fasten off.

Attach with a sl st in the first stitch of row 2.

(Row 5) Ch 2, dc in nx 4 sts, ch 3, turn.

(Row 6) Dc in nx 4 sts, ch 3, turn.

(Row 7) Dc in nx 4 sts, dc in each of the 5 sts of row 4.  Ch 3, turn. (end of buttonhole)

(Row 8) Dc in nx 9 sts, ch 3, turn.

Repeat row 8 until the piece is a few inches long, then try it on your crock pot by buttoning the buttonhole onto the lid's knob, then bring the strap through the handle and back towards the knob. You want the strap to be kind of tight, so stretch it some when you try it on the pot.  When the strap almost reaches the knob, it is time to make the next buttonhole.  (Count the number of times you crocheted row 8, and jot down that number.)

To make the center buttonhole, repeat rows 3 through 7,

Repeat row 8 until you have the same number of rows that you jotted down.

Repeat rows 3 through 8 for the final buttonhole.

(Last Row) Dc in nx 9 sts.  Fasten off.
