welcome to the ville :hook

the main stitch is the brick stitch, also called block st or crazy st.  http://crochet.about.com/library/blcrazyst.htm  shows how to make it, except yours has only 2 dc over the ch3, where that pattern has 3 dc over the ch3.

I think the joining is made by doing 2 sc in the first panel,, ch 1, 2 sc in the other panel.

Larnbrown: Love the afghan. Magiccrochetfan: Thanks for the pattern. I think I have an old scarf in that pattern. It was in some stuff I got after my grandmother passed. She knit/crocheted so I think she made it. I'll have to check.

I agree, it is the brick stitch but with one less dc. It is also called the box stitch, I just finished a prayer shawl using that stitch. Very easy to do and goes quickly.
