Yarn weight vs. Gauge

I have a slipper pattern which calls for size 4 medium yarn, using a size H hook. I am going to be using 2 strands of size 3 light yarn instead. My question is which hook should I use with the yarn I've chosen?

Do they give a gauge for a swatch measurement?  I find for anything that has a specific size I have to test the gauge to see what size hook I'll end up needing.  I rarely end up matching the hook the pattern calls for when its gauge specific.

The pattern says 7 scan and 7 rows = a 2" square. I tried it with the H hook and it was not square. So I don't think I'm doing it right.

You will have to try different hook sizes until you can match the gauge of the pattern. It can take several tries sometimes to get there.

It's really best to make a bigger swatch and then measure the central 2 inches.  So i would do at least 14 sc and 14 rows, then measure in the center.

And also let it sit for a couple hours for the yarn to tighten up again.
