ch1 in space?

I need a little help with a pattern for a tote.

 

It says to *dc, ch1 in next St*

In the next round, it says to  "dc, ch1 in each ch1 space*

 

 

How do you chain in a stitch?

 

Does this seem weird to anyone?

Yes it is poorly written. You are right, you cannot chain in a stitch. Do the dc where it says to, then ch one.

I would just chain in the space created by the chain one (as in under it) not into the chain but under the loops...I hope that makes sense..

Kathy is correct. I read through the pattern; dc in the space then ch 1 (not ch 1 in the sp), then go to the next stitch.
