Hi guys and gals! I'm making my first project with my own design, but I want to add a border. I was thinking about doing (sc, ch, dc,dc, dc, ch, sc) which I think is a shell. What do I hafta make different to go around the corners on a flat rectangular piece? Thanks!

you need to add stitches at the corner.  I suggest you look at the book Around the Corner Crochet Borders by Edie Eckman.  it should be available thru your local library, and if you look at the preview on amazon i think you can get a good idea of the contents.  section at the beginning on figuring out your own borders is very good, but also looking at the patterns for borders will give you lots of ideas.

a couple more dcs in the middle, maybe a tr in the center

Thank you guys! One more? On this topic. Should I do a row or two of sc before my border or just add the border to my.last row?

(sc, ch, dc,dc, dc, ch, sc) for the shell

 

you could try (sc, ch1, 3dc, tr, 3dc, ch1, sc)  That'd add 5 stitches to the corner.

You're welcome.  If that's not enough stitches to make it lay flat then you can always add another tr or two.

 

I usually do a sc or dc type of border before I add the finishing shells.  i think it just polishes it.

I too always add a round of sc. If it's a motif afghan -- and most of mine are-- I do longer stitches such as hdc or dc at joining

s to even things out.

I love Edie's border book, too.
