I think you are going to get a lot of different answers on this one.  I agree with your description of a 'classic' granny square, some might do a different number of chains in the corner, or even between the 3-DC groupings, but the look is the same/similar.  I'll even buy into granny squares who's middles start a little differently, but morph into a classic (3-DC, space, repeat) granny pattern in later rounds, as granny squares.  Or the classic-patterned granny rectangle.

 

I've seen some who refer to any motif as a granny square, which I disagree with.  A granny square is a motif, a crocheted square in a completely different stitch pattern is a motif, but all motifs are not granny squares.

I'm with Granny Square. I think that the 'granny square' is that specific pattern.  Other people call other squares granny squares.  Whether I think they are or not doesn't really matter as long as I know what other people are talking about.
