2 strand alternative?

I am working on some hats and they call for 2 strands of the same color for the main part of the hat. I am wondering what would be the alternative to useing 2 strands of worst weight? would 1 stand of bulky work? I want to use the same size hook that it calls for (6.5mm)

I would work up a swatch with your bulky yarn and see if you get the same gauge as with the 2 strands. You may have to go up one hook size with the bulky to get the gauge right.

I just made the Ugly but Warm hat by Dot Matthews using bulky (5) yarn with the same size hook that the pattern calls for (well actually one size down since I crochet loose). It came out the same as the one I made using 2 strands of WW that the pattern called for.
