head forms

I am interested in head forms to see if hats are going to fit. I know they can be bought..is there any way to make something that would work? paper mache over a balloon or something?

Hi,

I have several women's heads i got at a beauty supply store, but couldn't find anything in childrens sizes to use, to measure for hats, soooo, my imagination kicked in, and I looked up the measurements for babies and kids, and found or made a ball out of , you guessed it, YARN! So now I measure kids hats, and baby hats, on specific balls of yarn that corespond to the right head size! Watch it though, lol as I have inadvertantly used some from said ball once, and had to make another! lol Oh,and also, have a couple baby dolls too, that serve that pupose nicely for specific sizes of babies heads! Im sorry, I haven't really answered your question, i do hope someone does though, as I would be interested too, in thier ideas!

I don't know if paper mache would hold up to hats for very long. Have you thought about a styrofoam ball?

boy that is kinda a DOH concept on my end. Styrofoam ball would be fairly easy to get! Thanks I will try that!

What about a balloon? I've seen that used on Knitty Gritty.

I use a porcelain baby doll, works great as I use it to make baby hats for charity from my own ideas. You can pick up dolls (or just the heads) at yard sales or ebay real cheap and they are washable and look good in pics...
