How big is a "Throw" Blanket?

I have an important project that requires that I make a blanket in throw size but I have no idea how big a "Throw" is. Any suggestions at all would be so very helpful!!

I don't think there is a specific size as it would depend on the intended use, ie over the lap only, over legs when sitting in a recliner, or as a throw over chilly shoulders or for modesty when nursing a child.

general concensus to the couple of sites I checked all said, about 50 by 60. My velvet look throw, still in the plastic case it came in, says 50 by 60 as well. hope that helps...

3 - 3 1/2 x 5 ft.

 

It's about the same width as a twin bed ghan but only comes up to the pillow.
