How to clean yarn?

I got some yarn from someone on my local Freecycle. Well they must have smoked b/c the yarn is full of it. Stale cigarette smoke and just an overall musty type smell. There is quite a bit of yarn and no reason for it to go to waste. Is there a way to clean the yarn before using it?

throw it in some pantyhose and put it in the wash

Heavy smokers on yarn leaves an oily residue recommend washing in a stocking net bag on gentle wash cycle.
