What they said. When you work in a spiral, you have to mark either the first or last stitch (and remember which one!), or it's too easy to lose track of where you are. But a bobby pin or even a scrap of yarn can serve as a stitch marker, so to me the little bit of effort of moving the marker is well worth it. Even if a pattern calls for joining you can ignore that part & work in a continuous spiral.
