I have an awful time joining rounds in hats, etc. The seam is always diagonal across the work. Makes an ugly hat to me! Is there any way to have a straight seam?

Not if you join... even if you're a pro there will always be a visible line.

 

I like to just go in spirals, and use a stitch marker to mark the end of each round. No lines that way.

If you do it in a spiral, you don't even have to join, you just go round and round and round. That's how I do all of my hats.

What they said. When you work in a spiral, you have to mark either the first or last stitch (and remember which one!), or it's too easy to lose track of where you are. But a bobby pin or even a scrap of yarn can serve as a stitch marker, so to me the little bit of effort of moving the marker is well worth it. Even if a pattern calls for joining you can ignore that part & work in a continuous spiral.

WOW! Thanks to you all. I thought I was doing something terribly wrong. I couldn't imagine that crooked seam was the way it was supposed to look. No more joining rounds for me!
