Why can't I....

Question

Thinking about making a child's poncho using this pattern: http://freeknittingpatterns.lionbrand.com/printablePatterns/ccw-childsPoncho.pdf . Why would I want to knit or crochet 2 rectangles and sew them together? Why not crochet along the side of the first rectangle to start the second and then just sew one seam when I'm done? Is there a reason that this would be a bad idea?

That is exactly how I do it. I kind of make an "L" shape and then sew one seam in the back. I prefer this look, however, if you don't measure correctly it won't come out right.

I guess the rectangle shape is for beginners (like myself) easier to make :)

The very first real pattern I ever did was a poncho in the "L" shape. Now, I try to convert all the patterns to that. I tried the two rectangles and liked the look of the "L" better, so that's how I do it now. Yes, a few did not work out right, but I just added to the neckline, etc and it all worked out. Live and learn.:P
