Frazzled over tote straps

I'm making a large tote bag for my SIL for Christmas. I've worked the bottom with 2 strands of ww yarn, so it is heavy and stiff-it stands up well. The body is worked with only 1 strand, so I need to make straps that will go underneath the bag and come all the way up the sides and then turn into handles. However, I cannot figure out how to make that work. Any suggestions? I'd like to get this one off my hook so I can finish up the last of that household's Christmas gifts. I hate being stuck on one project-it takes over my mind and I can't focus on the rest of them.........lol.

I'm thinking work a flat strap until you get to the top of the bag, then double it over into a rounded handle.
