new crocheter struggles!

i'm attempting my first crocheting project... a reversible scarf from the book "cozy crochet"

i'm a bit confused about the instructions.

 

 

ch 251.

(sc, hdc, dc) into second ch from hook, *skip next 2 ch, (sc, hdc, dc) into next ch. Repeat from *across, ending row with skip next 2 ch, sc into last ch --250 sts total.

 

 

by skipping 2 ch, how does it go from 251 ch to 250?

any help would be good~ thanks~

because that end chain where you skipped only counts as one stitch not the two you skipped

Ahh, is this what you needed help on? Ok, when you chain 251 and single crochet into the second chain from hook, even if you single crocheted all the way across you would have 250 single crochets. The very last chain from your ch 251 counts as the turning ch 1 so it is not counted as a stitch.

but now perhaps i am reading the instructions incorrectly.

what i did was..

second ch: sc

third ch: hdc

fourth ch: dc

fifth and sixth ch: skip

seventh ch: sc

... etc...

that didn't come out to 251..

 

i even tried to sc, hdc, and dc all into the same second ch from the hook, skip the next 2 ch, and sc, hdc, and dc all into the next ch and etc.

i'm sure this is a real easy project.. but i don't know why i'm not getting the instructions!

ok you are supposed to make all three of those stitches in the same stitch...the three in one counts as three stitches when you count across......so it should work out

You make those three stitches in the same ch, then skip 2 ch and make 3 stitches in the next ch. The extra two stitches in the ch make up for the two ch's you skip.
