How do you know how many yards you need

I have a pattern for The Puritan Bedspread. It calls for 52 balls of Puritan Mercerized Cotton. How many yards would that be?

I did some googling for you and it seems it comes in either 175- or 300-yard balls. So it takes a LOT of thread!

You could do a bit of the bedspread and then do some math. If it's motifs and you do 10 motifs from one ball of thread, then you can figure out how many total balls.

Let's say you get 20 motifs from 1 ball of thread. It it's 600 motifs, then 20 motifs x 30 balls of thread gives you 600 motifs. Add perhaps another ball or two for borders.

 

If it's just one big rectangle, do the afghan for 1 ball. If the length is now like 6 inches and the total length is 84 inches, then you'd need 12 balls and another ball or two for borders.
