weaving in

Question

Ok, this is a total newbie question here, but ...

What's the best way to weave in the loose ends on your work? On my very first projects, I just cut the tail really short and hoped it wouldn't show, but that's probably a bad idea.

My assumption has been that you would somehow re-crochet the ends back into the piece, but I'm not really sure how that would work.

Yep - if it's yarn I use a needle and weave it back in, being careful to split the fibers back and forth once. That usually makes it super-solid, no give.

If it's thread, I use a quilting needle and work it in and through several stitches. Snowflakes I don't worry as much about how secure the end is before I snip it, I'm going to stiffen them anyway so it isn't going anywhere. The bookmarks and doilies I'm a little more careful with, usually weaving about an inch and a half of thread back in with the needle, a little in one direction, a little in another, back and forth. When I tug it, it feels secure so I feel relatively safe.

If you've got a minute, check out this how-to on weaving in ends. It's primarily a thread site, but the ideas can be applied to yarn just as easily. It totally changed my attitude toward working in the tails. :))
