Help with creating my own pattern

I want to make an afghan out of squares and want to know the best way to create the pattern. And how can you figure out how many squares you'll need for say a queen or king size bed? The squares will probably be about 3".

I would just measure length and width of the bed and figure out how big you want it, than divide by 3 (or however big the square is) that way you know how many squares are needed. Dont forget to factor in the outside border ~ depending on the width of the border it might add an inch or 2.

3-inch squares for a queen or king bed is a LOT of squares. If you are going to have a pattern with several colors, how about using quadrille graph paper? Borrow a few sheets from a math student and plot out your pattern. I like to make bigger squares so that it's less of a chore to sew them together.
