what am I doing wrong with my yarn winder?

I just got my yarn winder and the very first skein I tried to do...the yarn kept winding either above the roll or below the roll.Make sense?? any suggestions?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "above the roll", but is your thread guide locked into position? I know when I first got my yarn winder I had problems winding properly. Once I realized the thread guide needed to be immovable everything worked really well! Here is a photo of the yarn winder I have with the thread guide locked.
