how much yarn to buy

wansons

Question

I want to make a ripple afghan with sport weight wool for my queen size bed. Does anyone know how to compute how much yarn to buy???? I can't seem to find help anywhere. I would certainly rather have too much than not enough. Thanks for your help!:eek

I'd buy a skien of the yarn and work up a pattern swatch (at least 2 humps by how every many rows to make it mostly square, preferably 6" square because the math is easier), then weight and measure the swatch (I love my diet scale, though these days it only weighs yarn LOL). Next, measure how big the afghan needs to be and divide that by the swatch size so you know how many swatches it is, then multiply that by how much the swatch weighed , and divide that by how much the skein weighs to find how many skeins you'll need . Divide the number of skeins needed by each color to get how many skeins of each color. Always round your number up. I like to buy one extra of each color just in case of running short (from badly knotted skeins).
