Boyle hook and Bates hook #K different?

I just bought a Susan Bates size K hook at Michaels because I like the feel of the Susan Bates hook. When I got home and compared the Bates hook to the Boyle size K hook I have, it measures one size smaller even though it says "K". How can this be?

Not all letters mean the same MM; it's the millimeters that count in a size being exactly the same between brands.

You should check out the difference between the size N hooks.

That is one of the reasons I soley go by the mm not the letter. I don't like it when a pattern just calls for a I hook or whatever. I like to know exactly what I am using.
