Sticky yarn help!

I have some yarn that accidently got sodapop spilled on it. They are still in skein form, meaning it is not yet crochetted into a project. I have been warned that putting them in the washing machine as is would lead to a tangled mess. How can I get the yarn cleaned in such a way that it becomes usable again? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if it makes any difference, the yarn is Caron Simply Soft.

try pitting it in a zippered mesh laundry bag

i read a tip of putting a full skein into the leg of a nylon stocking and tying a knot so it fits snugly...maybe a knee high stocking would work for a single skein or two or the tip was to put several into the leg of panty hose and tie them like sausage links.
