Washing and blocking finished items with color

Hi All!

I'm about to make a doily for Christmas with red, white and green thread.

Now, I normally hand wash my doilies in mild soap before rolling them up and laying them out...but most of the time they're all one color.

But I'm now using 3 colors and how can I wash them without the colors running on each other?? Any hints?

Hmmmm....

Thanks in advance,

Martha

Hi Martha,

As long as you used quality cotton thread I don't think it will bleed on you. If you aren't sure do a quick test swatch with all the colors then hand wash it to see if it will bleed. If you used pearl cotton or embroidery thread there might be a problem depending on what you used.

If the colors are not color fast I don't know of away to avoid completely. You could try soaking it it lots of cold water so the colors are diluted. Then rinse really well with lots of running water. Then when you dry it sandwich it between two towels and roll up to get out the water.
