First you find your favorite stitch or one that you think will look pretty in a shawl. Decide if you want to work it width wise or length wise. By either using the multiple formula or working a swatch and measuring it, decide how many stitch pattern repeats you will need to make the shawl approximately 18" x 60". You can make it wider, narrower, shorter or longer, but 18" x 60" is a good size that will fit an average person.

Make your rectangle and then go around the edge with a fun fur/novelty yarn, or just a nice edge stitch (like a shell or something similar). Fake the stitch pattern if it doesn't fit exactly, by doubling up stitches, skipping stitches etc.
