Working in ends on granny squares

I am having a really hard time learning how to work in the ends on my granny squares so that they don't pop back out. If I change colors several times in a square, the ends tend to stick out after a while, and I end up with a piece that has little ends out all over it. Can anyone give me pointers on how to make my ends stay put?
