Pattern worked in multiples?

I've noticed more and more patterns saying things like "Pattern worked in multiples of 10 + 7". I can't figure out how that corresponds to anything in the pattern and it's driving me nuts. What's it mean??

It's the formula for your base chain, and is given so you can adjust the pattern or use the stitch somewhere else.

 

What it means is to make your starting chain a multiple of 10 [10,20,30 etc...] plus seven, to end up with 17 or 27 or 37.

 

Some patterns will even go beyond that and say "Mulitiples of ten plus seven, add three for turning chain" So, you'd do your multiple of ten [20] plus seven [27] plus three for turning chain to end up with 30 ch to begin.
