I tried something different

A full bath of food coloring brought almost to a boil in vinegar water. It was half a full size bottle (the ones sold individually). The color never seemed fully absorbed, but I love the brightness of the yellow.

 

The spotted one is just dripped on neon food coloring, then I decided it was a bit dry so before it went in the microwave I splashed on some of the vinegar water it had been soaked in. That's when the blue spread throughout the yarn; but I love it.
