Decrease at beginning of row?

I understand how to decrease at the end of a row thanks to Maggie Righetti's book, but am having trouble finding good instructions on how to decrease at the beginning of a row. I am working a clothing pattern that requires decreases at both the beginning and end of some rows.

There are two ways - either skip the first stich and work into the second - this will create a "sharp" decrease, and I've seen it used in neckline shaping.

 

The other way is to work 2sctog over the first two stitches. This creates a more gradual decrease.

Thanks! I have been skipping the first stitch thinking I fudged it. The pattern is all DC and uses a P hook, so it's mesh-y anyway and the extra hole doesn't show.
