Red Heart Tiki Yarn

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used Red Heart Tiki Yarn before? My mother has requested this shawl and it requires this yarn. I have never used it before and was wondering how soft it was. From the picture of it, it doesn't look too soft and it looks like it would work up difficultly. Any feedback??? If its not nice, what yarn could I substitute for it that would be really soft?

I was just reading it and it also requires hand washing and flat drying. Something my mother would not appreciate, I'm sure.

I have used it several times - both by itself and carried along with another yarn. This shawl was made with luster sheen and Tiki

I like the way the Tiki adds color without bulk

These 2 scarves were Tiki alone

This was done in a stitch that you wrap the yarn around the hook 3 times to make it longer (drop stitch?)

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b202/terrybb/scarfs/Scarf-Tiki.jpg This has lots of fringe. These sold very well at the crafts sale because they're light and open and wrap easily. I think the best stitch for Tiki alone is something open like dc or tc on a J, K, or larger hook that shows off the little "flags". It's different to work with if you're used to ww but fun and challenging and looks so pretty.

I say go for it :yes

The scarf is just chain base to the width you want - I think mine was 6 inches - plus 4 chain. Use a K or L hook and ch loose.

1.Turn and dc in 4th chain from hook, ch1, skip 1 base ch, dc in next ch and repeat to end of row. If you have a base ch left over you can undo it when you weave in the end.

2. Turn, ch 4 (counts as 1dc and ch 1) dc in top of next dc below, *ch1, dc in top of dc below*, repeat * to end. Dc in 3rd ch of turning chain

Repeat 2. till desired length. If you need to attach a new skein it's best to do it at the end or beginning of a row.

Finish off, weaving in ends. Cut fringe peices twice the length you want and attach to all 4 sides of scarf. You can make them single strands or double - I think mine were single.

The fringe will get hung up on the scarf sometimes but don't worry about it. It moves beautifully and looks so delicate.

I hope these directions work - I just made it up as I went along. If you have problems feel free to email me. Have fun.

My daughter wants something out of the Tiki, too. I had questions about using it also. (Light and Lofty is about as furry as I have gotten and did not know how the Tiki would compare.)

Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful photos -- she loves pink shades and I think a simple scarf in the Tiki pink shade will be perfect for her. :-)

BTW, I think the triple-wrap stitch you used looks like a double-treble crochet stitch. JMHO ;-)
