I agree with Lacycrochet.  Conventionally, if a pattern says to make 1 stitch, and doesn't say where, it's in the next stitch.  If it said 'x number of hdc', and didn't say where, it means 1 hdc in each of the next x stitches.  Your pattern very specifically said  2 in the following stitch, meaning the stitch following the one you put 1 hdc into.

When I learned to crochet way before the internet, and didn't have anyone handy to ask after the first lesson, I learned to follow patterns 100% literally and never make assumptions that it meant anything else on the first pass; 99.9% that was the right thing to do, and if it didn't work out, I'd look at the pattern photo and figured out what it meant.
