Adding to basic granny square

I am making a blanket for my daughters' dolls and I made a heart square that uses basic stitches but color changes to make the heart. The finished square isnt big enough but I want a little variety besides just basic pattern with color change.

What if you added a solid border all around for x rounds to get close to the size you need, but then add little hearts at the edge to complete the distance you need?  I just googled 'crochet heart border' and BUNCHES came up, below are a couple of examples that caught my eye and didn't look too complicated, but would be cute.

This one looks fairly easy.  This one that sticks up is pretty cool, and it looks like it would be easy to fudge the spacing by a stitch now and then if it edge stitch count didn't come out even, it shows worked into fabric but no reason you couldn't add it to crochet.  This one is a little more substantial / more solid, I think it would blend in nicely with a traditional granny square.
