How much yarn do I need?

Hello!

I am very new to crochet aka I have never crocheted before, and I was wondering if anyone knew how much yarn I would need to make a pretty big ball for a big caterpillar plush I want to make. I think I’m going to use 4 weight yarn but I have no clue how much I should get. Each of the the balls of its body are going to be I think the size of a basketball and I have no clue how many of those I’m going to make (I’ll guess maybe 10ish), so any help on how much just one would use would be greatly appreciated.

You are going to need to make a swatch using the yarn you plan to work with and try to calculate but big problem is you dont know how many and how big you want the balls.  I would purchase some yarn make my first ball to see how much yarn it took and then go buy the rest.  Now the problem doing that would be when you go back to purchase more you could find the color or yarn discontinued.
