Gauge swatch

Hi my first crochet project in years is an afghan and actually have 2 questions about the pattern.

The first is that the pattern alters single crochet with double crochet but the gauge info on the pattern is this:

Crochet Gauge13 sc and 14 rows = 4" (10cm)

The 2nd question is do I need to create a gauge swatch for any other reason than to get in the habit of it?

Because it is an afghan most don't bother with gauge.  Unless you need it a certain size you should be ok with hook, yarn recommendations from the pattern.
