Help with pattern instructions

KJLanding

Question

I am working on a peacock feather design throw. I have been able to do all the feathers, but now when it comes time to start the center of the project which will connect all of the feathers together, I am at a loss.

First line before any of the instructions even start reads: “After every round, cast off and work ends in.”

The parenthesis indicates color of yarn to use, as the pattern uses 8 different colors. Prior to this portion of the instructions, the color changed for each round.

1.      (Royal) 12 x sc in magic circle. Pull through and secure. (12)

2.      (Royal) 16 x lsc into middle of magic circle (16)

3.      (Royal) [sc, ch2, sk1st] x 8 (16)

4.      (Royal) [Hdc, 2dc, hdc, in chsp] x 8 (32)

5.      (Royal) working in the back of the work [sc between the 2 dcs into the chain of round 3, ch2] x 8 (24)

6.      (Royal)( [4dc in chsp, sc in top of shell from round 4] x 8

7.      (Royal) Working in the back of the work [sc between middle dcs of round 6 into chain of round 5, ch3] x 8

8.      (Royal) [2dc tr 2dc in chsp, sc in middle of shell from round 6] x 8

9.      (Royal) Working in the back of the work [sc before tr in round 8 into chain of round 7. ch 4] x 8

10.   (Deep) [2dc 2tr 2dc in chsp, blsc in shell from round 8] x 8

My difficulty begins with number 5. I understood that for all the instructions for the feathers (which were all prior to this) that I was not to turn my work over like you normally do when crocheting rows. I was to start each new round at basically the same place I stopped the prior round (unless specified otherwise).

Beginning with 5, I am to turn my work over and sc between the 2dcs into the chain of round 3 and then ch2. I take this to mean I am basically doing a sc onto the chain at the bottom of the 2dcs that the 2dcs were attached to. I think I understand this much.

When I go to 6 is where I really get into trouble. I assume I’m working from the front of my work again, but it sounds as if I am to reach my hook through the front and somehow go around the chsp in the back to make my 4dc and then do a sc at the top of the shall previously made from the front.

Can you explain these instructions any more clearly because I’m at a loss. I tried to do what I thought I was supposed to be doing, but my work looks nothing like the pictures of what it’s supposed to look like.

You are making a round of scallops into a ch sp.  Then you are turning your work making chains and sc between stitches you made in ch sp.  I made extra ch so we could see better.

Flip it back over to the front and push the stitches down out of your way and work in that ch space just like you would normally work in a chain space
