How to join to first dc?

Question

Hi everyone,

I have a crocheting pattern for a baby beanie/hat.

It starts with a magic circle of 11 dc, which I did. It then says: "join to first dc, chain 2."

I'm not sure what to do now, I just stuck my hook in the first dc and did 2 chains, but I ended up with 12 stitches in total, whereas the pattern specifically states 11 dc after first round.

Please help! Thank you very much.

welcome to the ville!  make a slip stitch into the top of the first dc, then chain 2.  do not count the slip stitch as a stitch; you can put a marker in it so you'll recognize it on the next round.
